CHOMP Family Bench Problem: Design seating which can be assembled without fasteners. Solution: CHOMP is a multi-functional family bench made from a standard sheet of plywood.
Mythical worlds Early sketches explored the Jules Verne universe as a source of inspiration
Exploring entomology The wide diversity in the shapes, functions and environments of insects provided early inspiration for the CHOMP bench.
Arriving at the ant concept Half-scale mockups were created from corrugated cardboard exploring how the shapes could be notched together without using glue or screws.
Creating a stable structure
A multi-functional family furnishing The design evolved to foster a sense of creativity in the usage of the product. Families with childrend of any age would find use in CHOMP and parents could appreciate its beauty as an object.
Antennae were added to strengthen the structure and to be used as bookends.
Easy to manufacture, easy to ship CHOMP was designed to be easily mass-produced. The bench's parts fit snugly on a 4 by 8 sheet of plywood. A small stool was created from the scrap material. The stool participates in the story as an aphid-like insect, but also provides seating for the youngest users.
CHOMP More than half of all known organisms are insects. CHOMP was inspired by this strange and fascinating diversity With its playful yet refined design, the CHOMP bench encourages a variety of activities and interactions. CHOMP is a bench, a table, aple for the family to get together.
